That depends on the model. Roughly speaking, a distinction is made between S-pedelecs, pedelecs and e-bikes.
S-pedelecs are equipped with unlimited pedal assistance. These models require a moped licence and insurance.
Pedelecs with limited pedal assistance differ in that the motor only assists you when you pedal at the same time. The maximum motor speed is 25 kilometres per hour. Pedelecs do not require a driving licence or insurance.
E-bikes, on the other hand, which reach a maximum speed of up to 45 kilometres per hour, are subject to registration. Helmets are compulsory for these bikes. A driving licence and valid insurance are also mandatory.
Depending on whether you want to insure a model that is subject to registration or a model that is not subject to registration, you will need different coverage.
For models subject to registration, you need liability insurance in order to participate in road traffic with your e-bike. Conventional e-bike insurance is sufficient for models that are not subject to registration. They can be added to your household insurance, for example.
In any case, it is recommended to always lock your e-bike, i.e. using an adequate bike lock.
Most e-bikes have a pedal assistance of up to 25 kilometres per hour. These are not subject to registration. If you ride faster than 25 km/h on these models, you will need your own muscle power, as the motor no longer provides any assistance above this speed limit.
Some e-bikes can go up to 45 kilometres per hour. However, these are subject to registration and may only be ridden by persons with a driving licence.
Particularly light e-bikes weigh about fourteen kilograms. You should take the permissible total weight into account when deciding what to buy. Often, e-bikes are approved for a total weight of up to 120 kilograms, so that the load limit can quickly be reached by a heavy rider with luggage.

There are also so-called Incube models where the battery is integrated into the frame. With these models, the battery can be charged directly on the bike, for example if you have a socket in your garage or shed.
When charging the battery, you should always plug the power supply unit into the socket first and then connect it to your e-bike or the battery. This prevents short circuits and consequential damage.
How much electricity an e-bike consumes depends on your electricity tariff and the respective battery. Charging a 500 watt hour (Wh) battery at an electricity rate of 0.30 euros per kilowatt hour (kWH) costs about 0.15 euros. This value is generated by each complete charging cycle, whether this is achieved completely or by intermediate charging.
An e-bike consumes about 0.7 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity over a distance of 100 kilometers, which is about seven watt hours (Wh) per kilometer. To put this into perspective, one kWh is roughly equivalent to a washing machine load or seven hours of television.
Most e-bikes have a lithium battery. These are used because of their longer life expectancy and are mostly designed for 1000 charges. This means you can fully recharge the entire battery capacity 1000 times.
In order to use your battery for as long as possible, you should care for and maintain your battery accordingly. You should avoid completely discharging the battery and not leave your battery on the charger for an unnecessarily long time when it is fully charged.
It is recommended that you charge your battery when it has 20 percent charge remaining, up to a charge of 90 to 95 percent.
How to choose the right electric bike for you?
Buying an electric bike has become the perfect solution for all those who demand a mobility solution which disconnects them from the car and allows them to exercise. Without a doubt, it is a comfortable, efficient and environmentally sustainable means of transport. But what should you take into account when choosing a cheap e-bike?
What types of electric bikes are there?
An e-bike is a normal bike to which a pedal assistance system based on an electric motor powered by a battery has been added. This is very useful when climbing hills effortlessly or maintaining a constant speed when riding on the road in the city.
However, although all cheap electric bikes share this feature, there are many types.
- Electric MTB. Or mountain bike electric. It is a model specially designed for mountain trails characterized by the presence of gravel, mud and multiple obstacles such as stones or roots. The mountain electric bikes offer enough power to overcome them without difficulty and face very steep slopes.
- Urban electric bike. The specifically designed for trips in the city. In fact, if you are looking for a cheap electric bike with which to go to work, school or college every day, this is probably your best option. It usually has baskets and accessories to carry backpacks and bags, as well as mudguards that will prevent you from getting dirty during the ride and very comfortable seats.
- Folding electric bike. An ideal alternative to the urban electric bike. In fact, its features are similar, except that its structure is designed to fold and take up as little space as possible. It can even be carried with one hand. Of course, a folding ebike has smaller diameter wheels and a smaller transmission system, so it does not allow to move as fast.
- Electric road bikes. Are you passionate about cyclotourism and go out every weekend to climb a new mountain pass? Then look for deals on electric bikes of this type. The weight and the location of the motor
Both aspects are more important than you think when buying an electric bike. First of all, you should know that there are two types of electric motors:
- Electric motors with brushes. Those equipped in most economical electric bikes. They are heavier than the following and also produce more noise than the previous ones, although they are much cheaper.
- Brushless electric motors. The lightest and quietest, but also the most expensive. They can make a big difference to the price of electric bikes that use them.
By law, however, no e-bike motor can exceed a rated power of 250W. In addition, many of them are limited so that they can't exceed 25 km/h. This is especially common in urban models, but not so much in road and mountain models as they are mainly focused on sports.
In turn, when determining which electric bike to buy, you should also consider where the motor is located:
- On the front wheel. You will notice that the vibrations caused by bumps are transmitted more strongly to the handlebars and from there, they pass to your arms. This makes riding them more tiring and uncomfortable.
- On the rear wheel. The motor in this position makes the cheap electric bike more stable. However, the vibrations affect the saddle. In this position also loses driving force.
- On the central axle. Undoubtedly, the best location as it favors an excellent weight distribution between both axles. Buying an ebike of this type is always a good idea, even if it is a little more expensive.
The battery: types, range and charging times
Another aspect that most influences the price of electric bicycles is the battery that powers the motor. Currently, almost all those on the market are equipped with lithium batteries similar to those used by mobile devices (smartphones, tablets, etc.). Gone are the lead or nickel and metal hydride, which were less efficient and durable and had memory effect.
The recharge time of the battery of a cheap electric bike depends mainly on its capacity and the inclusion of fast charging systems by the manufacturer. Based on this, we find the fact that the best ebike in quality price can take to reach 100% of its autonomy in 3 hours, while a cheap model may need up to 8 hours.
No doubt, a very influential aspect when looking for electric bike offers. But so is the range time. Most urban bikes offer between 40 km and 60 km of continuous operation (depending on the weight of the rider and the amount of slopes to be faced).
