Surround systems
A surround system usually consists of a total of four to five speaker cabinets. You use a subwoofer to provide the necessary bass. To control the system, you may need an AV receiver, which also serves as an amplifier. For your audio system, you therefore connect several channels together to achieve a comprehensive room sound effect.
An active speaker is equipped with an amplifier. You can connect active speakers directly to your playback device. With passive speakers, you need an external amplifier. Without this element, you hear nothing of the music or the movie.
A passive surround system is more flexible because you can assemble the individual components. You can also replace defective parts more quickly than with an active system, which you can see as an advantage.

A 5.1 system consists of five main channels. You connect three speakers at the front, one in the middle and the other two on the left and right. In addition, you'll need two speakers that you place at the height of your sofa on the left and right sides for ambient sound.
For even more encompassing sound, go with the 7.1 system. Since the seven speakers are arranged in a circle around you as an audience member, you'll get sound from all sides, even from behind.

Which surround system is right for you depends on the room conditions, your sound requirements and your budget. Many manufacturers offer speaker systems with different speaker sizes, so you can fit a small-format 7.1 system with seven micro speakers in small rooms, for example.
The power in watts is indicated with RMS (Root Mean Square). The wattage refers mainly to the amplifier power and affects a powerful bass. From about 100 watts upwards, you will perceive the low tones particularly distinctly. Otherwise, you should also adjust the wattage of the surround system and the volume to the room size.
You only need an external amplifier if you choose a passive surround system. With an active system, the amplifier is already built in, so you don't need to buy this element separately.
The installation of the surround system depends on the number of channels and the individual components. For example, a 5.1 system requires five speakers, a 7.1 system requires seven speakers.

To add the corresponding picture to the sound, a beamer and screen or a TV set are the most suitable options. For the installation you need an HDMI cable. Use it to establish a connection between the receiver of your sound system and the TV.
Then, in the settings of your TV, you have to set the sound to be transmitted via HDMI, and then nothing can stand in the way of your surround sound. Some systems are wireless versions where you connect the individual modules via Bluetooth or WLAN, among other things.
