Welding equipment
A welding machine provides the necessary energy or heat to fuse two workpieces together. For seamless fusion, some devices use an additive. In fusion welding, the two most common methods are electrode welding and gas shielded arc welding.
An electrode welder creates a short circuit using an electrode, which acts as the positive pole, and the workpiece as the negative pole. When both poles are connected by means of clamps that run across the device, an arc is created that melts the material at high temperatures. A gas-shielded welder also provides a supply of gases that react specifically with the joints (active) or protect them from ambient air (inert).

A gas-shielded welder also provides a supply of gases that react specifically with the joints (active) or protect them from ambient air (inert).
There are electrode welders as well as different types of shielded arc welders. Gas shielded welding equipment includes:
MIG (metal inert gas) and MAG (metal active gas) welding equipment.
TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welders
Plasma cutters
Flux-cored welding equipment
Autogenous welding equipment
Plasma cutters are not suitable for welding, but you will often find them as an extension to a welding machine.
A special category are inverted welders - these represent a different welding power source and score with small dimensions, additional functions, better cooling and alternating and direct current.

Welding type/welding device
Application
Electrofusion
Steel & stainless steel from two millimetres thickness, many applications with suitable electrodes
Gas-shielded welding (MIG/MAG)
Steels and non-ferrous metals, from thin sheet to stronger steels
TIG welding
all metals, popular for alloyed steels and light metals
Oxyacetylene welding
unalloyed and low alloyed steels, also usable as flame cutter and brazing tool

For smaller tasks you only need a power of 100 amps (electrode welding) to 180 amps (gas shielded welding). Devices in the 200 to 300 amp range form the middle, with which you already achieve good results. A welding machine with more than 300 amps is usually only worthwhile for professionals due to the higher price, or if you often weld thicker materials.
You can calculate the power consumption of your welder as follows: If you multiply the electrical power of the device in watts (W) by the hours you use it, you get the electrical work in kilowatt hours (kWh). If you don't know the power in watts, you can calculate it by multiplying the voltage (in volts) by the current (in amperes). To calculate the cost of your electricity consumption, you only have to add the kilowatt hours to the price per kilowatt hour of your electricity tariff.
The choice of the right shielding gas depends on your process. When welding with inert gases, for example MIG, TIG or plasma welding, it is best to use argon or helium. These gases are inert and protect your joint from air and reactions with it. If you want to use an active gas for a MAG welding process, which affects your weld seam or your arc, you either use a mixed gas of argon and carbon dioxide (CO2) or a mixed gas of argon and oxygen (O2).
When welding, you should protect your entire body from possible injuries, UV radiation and material splashes. That's why it's best to use:
long-sleeved, flame-retardant clothing
Protective gloves
Arm warmers
Safety goggles or helmet
Safety shoes
Protective clothing is differentiated according to safety classes. Protection class one is sufficient for you if you only weld occasionally. Protection class two is somewhat more durable and is worthwhile if you work with welding equipment on a daily basis.
