1989 The Lord Mayor's Show Presentation Pack. British Presentation Packs catalogue number PP175 (printed no. 202) Issued by the Royal Mail on 17th October 1989. This pack contains a set of five 20p mint stamps, which were produced to celebrate 800 years of the Lord Mayor of London. The office of Lord Mayor of London began in 1189 with the election of Henry Fitz-Ailwyn. King John officially recognised the people's right to elect their Lord Mayor, but he required that an oath of allegiance to the Crown be sworn by each newly-elected Mayor. The oath swearing tradition continues to this day. Inside the pack are details of the tradition of the Lord Mayor's Show with information of the procession route, mention of Dick Whittington's election and images of some of the Lord Mayor's regalia.
