Essential elements of car speaker design

Woofer

A woofer is the part of a loudspeaker that produces low-pitched and mid-bass sounds. Also known as a bass driver, it typically connects to the speaker cabinet with a spider-shaped piece of foam or fabric. Woofers and subwoofers are usually made from paper, but high-end aftermarket cones are usually made from polypropylene, polyester or aramid fibres. Most woofers have bluetooth connectivity and their power-handling is higher compared to subwoofers.

Tweeters

The material used in a tweeter's diaphragm will affect the speaker's sound. Different materials produce different sounds, so you should consider what type of sound you want before purchasing. Some tweeters are made of soft materials like polyester, silk, or textile blends. These offer slightly mellow, refined audio with smooth highs. Tweeters made of hard materials like metal and sometimes graphite are more durable and have a brighter, snappier sound.

Surrounds

A surround is a durable rubber piece that can be added to the outside of a woofer to protect it from hitting corners and walls. On low-frequency drivers, the surround acts as a spring to direct the sound towards the center of the woofer cone. It absorbs vibrations and dishes out top-notch audio while protecting your driver. Quality surrounds are made of rubber or foam, but cloth surrounds cost less and doesn't perform as well over time.

Bi-amp system

When choosing your speakers, an important thing to consider is whether or not you need to bi-amp. Putting in a bi-amp system will allow better audio quality and more transparent sound than simply having one speaker and amp. This system enables the woofers and tweeters to receive their dedicated amplification.

Buying Guide For Cheap Car Speakers

Listening to music in your car is like having a concert or a DJ every time you turn on the ignition. Unfortunately, most factory speakers are weak and can’t deliver the depth and thump to the music you want. Replacing stock speakers with new ones is one of the fastest ways to change your car’s audio system for a quick and affordable upgrade. This guide will give you all the necessary info you may need about our car speakers for sale. Follow it closely to learn more about excellent car speakers available on our site!

How many speakers do I need?

Depending on what else you might want to add to your system, the answer could range from a single speaker in the dash to a dozen or more. The standard factory-installed car audio system consists of four speakers, two in the front doors and two in the back. It's a good idea to keep it that way when replacing speakers, particularly if you have an aftermarket head unit with preamp outputs. Having the same brand and series of speakers in both locations also helps ensure they'll be voice matched.

That said, you don't have to start there. If you find that adding just one new speaker improves what you hear over your factory-installed system, go for it. You can always add another speaker later. But if your budget allows for more extensive changes, it makes sense to make them at the same time, so you'll hear consistent sound characteristics as you move around inside your vehicle.

Speakers for the front of your car

A typical vehicle has two speakers in the front. Each will play a different section of the audio spectrum, typically known as woofers and tweeters. The woofer handles bass frequencies, while the tweeter focuses on the higher frequencies. Although it won’t reproduce the lowest octaves, the center dash speaker handles midrange and some bass keeping in mind that the speaker size is different. Check out our huge collection of car speakers for sale.

Speakers for the rear deck of your car

The rear deck is the part of the trunk that sits above the back window. Many people refer to this area as "the trunk" (even though it isn't always a storage space), so keep that in mind when searching for parts and installation instructions. Rear deck speakers are either full-range or component speakers. Full-range are designed to provide sound evenly through your car's audio system but aren't as good at delivering high-quality audio as component speakers. Components have separate subwoofers and tweeters, so they provide better sound quality than full-range speakers and are often more rugged.

So, what's the difference between all those speaker sizes?

The most important thing to remember is that the overall volume coming out of your speakers (measured in watts) is controlled by the receiver or amplifier. The amp isn't concerned with the size of the voice coil in your speaker — it just tells it how hard to push. So if you're replacing a factory 5-1/4" speaker with a 6-1/2", it will sound louder, but that's because you've turned up the volume control on your receiver. A more prominent speaker may go louder with less power than a smaller one, but it won't necessarily have better sound quality.

What type of speakers should you get for your car audio?

When it comes to choosing a cheap car speaker, you’ll probably come across two types of speakers: full-range, 2-way coaxial speakers, and components. What’s the difference? We take a look at each below so that you can find out!

  1. Component speakers consist of separate tweeters, subwoofers, and crossovers. These are more expensive but also more compact than 2-way car speakers. These speakers are typically installed in the dash, center console, or doors of a vehicle. They tend to range between 65-100 watts, meaning their power output is higher compared to others.
  2. Coaxial speakers have all three elements rolled into one speaker. These are typically cheaper and easier to install, but they can't be installed in a vehicle’s doors. Coaxial speakers are often found in a car’s dash or rear deck. Their watts range between 35 to 65 watts.
  3. Full-range speakers are the simplest type of speaker. They're not as efficient or loud as the other two varieties, but they're less expensive and easier to install than component or coaxial speakers. Full-range speakers are usually installed in the front doors, under the dashboard, or on the pillars near the windshield.
