Although the term “Château” is the French for a castle or second manor house, when this word became fashionable in the Bordeaux wine region, it started being used for any wine-producing estate. However, over time, the use of the term has been limited and regulated by law to just describe the characteristics of the wine and not of the building. So when we say “Château” we are just talking about Bordeaux wines protected by an AOC and made entirely from grapes harvested and vinified on the estate. Under this same definition, of making their own wines with their own grapes, many wineries have sought to imitate the term “chateau”. This is how the Fernández Rivera Family has built one of the most emblematic wineries of the Golden Mile, following a very French style on the banks of the Ribera del Duero.
