Rudolf Abrahamczik History The Messerschmitt Me 410 emerged as the Luftwaffe's premier night intruder during the final years of the Second World War. Fast, deadly and heavily armed, these Fernnachtjagd aircraft were tasked with disrupting Allied bomber operations under cover of darkness. Operating in conjunction with regular Blitz bombers yet often flying alone through hostile skies, Me 410 pilots hunted bomber streams and struck at vulnerable aircraft as exhausted crews approached their bases after gruelling missions. History continued: Despite its exceptional capabilities, the Me 410 faced relentless opposition the moment it crossed the English Channel. Britain's sophisticated air defence network, honed to perfection throughout the war, made every incursion a deadly gauntlet. RAF de Havilland Mosquito nightfighters proved particularly lethal, their crews becoming expert nocturnal hunters that exacted a devastating toll on Luftwaffe aircraft of all types.
