We remember the '70s: everyone wanted the fat, creamy tube overdrive, but this was only possible at downright harmful volumes (since the master volume control was not so widespread). Many pickups simply delivered too little output and sustain because the amp couldn't be sufficiently overdriven. But then, Larry DiMarzio built the Super Distortion, and thus the blueprint of all distortion pickups was born.
