The Crate Collection was originally designed by Dutch architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld in 1934 with the aim of reusing surplus wooden shipping containers. The collection has been re-introduced through a collaboration between Rietveld Originals and HAY. Respecting the original design, the Crate Lounge Sofa has the same precisely balanced proportions and transparent construction to minimize production costs and optimize the assembly process. The sofa has low proportions with a slightly sloping back and seat, complemented by supportive armrests. Its simplicity and spacious design reflect the architect's principles by offering functionality and comfort without taking up excessive space. Made of solid pine with a water-based varnish in various color choices, the Crate Lounge Sofa is suitable for various outdoor settings and can be supplemented with optional seat cushions in selected textiles for extra comfort.
