Design: Santa & Cole Concept: In 1955, when Alvar Aalto was the dominant figure in Helsinki's cultural life, Ilmari Tapiovaara introduced himself as the first Finnish designer who was not an architect. He was an expert in chairs and furniture and created his only and unique household lamp: Maija. The Maija collection gives a sense of light in the Baltic cities, where the streets are barely lit, apart from the light that shines in through the windows of homes and shops: inside and out. Tapiovaara is inspired by this and has created a gingerbread structure consisting of stacked metal slices that filter out the happy inner light.
