The black elder Sambucus nigra 'Black Lace' produces delicate, almost-black lacy foliage that adds drama to borders. Flat, white flowerheads appear in early summer, followed by dark autumn berries that attract birds. Fully hardy (H5), it grows rapidly to around 3m tall and wide and tolerates full sun or part shade. Supplied as a 9cm pot plant, it prefers moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil and can be pruned to control size.
