When a head rotates rapidly and then comes to an abrupt stop, rotational acceleration can cause high levels of strain in brain tissue. The stretching of the tissue caused by these movements can lead to various types of brain injury. MIPS uses a slip-plane system that moves inside the helmet, mimicking the brain’s own protection system. This layer is designed to rotate inside the helmet in order to potentially slow down or reduce the amount of energy transferred to or from the head.
