This is an elongates, Italian oxheart beefsteak variety with pink flesh. The large, meaty, heart shaped fruits weigh up to 200g each and have thick fleshy walls, ideal for sauces, pastas and curries as well as salads and sandwiches. Suitable for growing in a greenhouse or outside in a sheltered location. For greenhouse crops, sow indoors from January to April. A warm kitchen windowsill is all you need for starting these seeds. Sow thinly, 0.5cm deep, in a pot of compost. Water well and place in a warm position. A temperature of 15-20 °C is ideal. Keep moist. Seedlings usually appear in 7-14 days. Transplant to individual pots when 10-15cm tall. Grow on in cooler, but not cold conditions. Plant out April to May to large pots, growing bags or greenhouse border. Harvest from June to October. For outdoor crops, delay indoor sowing until March or April. Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions, before planting out into warm, well-drained soil, 45cm apart, when frosts are over.
