Succinite or Baltic amber is the best known fossil resin. It was first described in mineralogical lists in 1820 by August Breithaupt, professor of minerology at the Mining Academy in Freiberg, Germany.The name succinite comes from Pliny the Elder, who in his work Naturalis in the 1st century AD wrote that even our ancestors believed that amber was sap (sucus), calling it succinum for this reason (book XXXVII).
