We import our kokum butter from forestry farmers in Sindhudurg, Maharashtra, India. ◎ FORESTRY AND ORIGIN: Garcinia indica trees or just kokum trees (pronounced: ko kam) have been growing in the wild for eons, on and around the west coast of India. Kokum trees thrive in these pristine regions of India without the use of chemical fertilizers, insecticides, and pesticides. ◦ Composition and Instructions: Unrefined kokum butter is one of the most stable and hardest. Melt it in a water bath for use alone or beat the melted liquid into your homemade creations. Another special feature that makes them popular with cosmetic formulators is that cocum butter remains in a solid state at room temperature but melts upon contact with the skin. WHY IT'S EXPENSIVE Traditional physical extraction produces only about 25% unrefined cocum butter. On the other hand, the use of chemical solvents in the extraction process increases performance by up to 44%. The resulting chemically refined butter is less expensive.
