First found in 1944 and named for its Japanese discoverer, the rare opaque mineral ranges from grayish lavender to pink to dark purple. Transparent as a watercolor pigment, it combines subtle fuchsia pink and warm gray in a single, highly textured color. In one wash, gray settles in with a faint sheen similar to graphite, while pink rises to resemble the color of a sky covered by dawn. It is an excellent complement to golds, oranges and greens, including Quinacridone Gold and Sap Green.
