Introducing the Physalis Chinese Lantern. Cape Gooseberry is the common name for Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii, a hardy perennial plant. It has small, white flowers that bloom in midsummer above green, oval leaves. The plant produces edible fruits that are enclosed in red, lantern-shaped husks. These bright red husks add a splash of colour to the perennial borders in autumn. They can also be used for decorative purposes by cutting the stems and arranging them in vases. The husks will gradually dry out and reveal the delicate skeleton of the calyx, creating a beautiful winter display in the garden. The plant can grow up to 75cm (30") tall and 90cm (36") wide.
