Maker of legendary recorders like the R8 and R16, Zoom are always looking to develop new, innovative gear. Zoom's latest offering, the fully-modernised Zoom R20 comes loaded with an intuitive multi-colour touch-display where you can not just access additional master section controls but the built-in DAW. That's right - this high-tier multi-tracker features integrated DAW-style options, and while they're obviously not as extensive as the functions of a regular DAW pack, it's more than enough for producing complete tracks with nothing but a microphone and a guitar. Zoom R20 Features The built-in DAW also features a synthesizer - a straight-up 8-voice FM synth that serves up the e-piano sounds when you need them - plus 150 ready-made drum loops. The synth-engine is controlled via an external USB-MIDI keyboard (not included) but can also be tweaked via the display. As a bonus, you've got a single MIDI track at your disposal, which you will have to render to audio before you're able to record fresh MIDI data. A useful feature if you're into producing simple songs on the fly. The Numbers In total, the Zoom R20 sets you up with sixteen tracks, eight of which can be used at the same time to record audio via the eight inputs, including Hi-Z and phantom-powered ports. Also, if you're working with a laptop and DAW software, it's worth knowing that the R20 can be used as a DAW controller, or as an 8-in/2-out USB-C audio-interface.
