When your child is ten months old, it is worth having a first set of cutlery for learning to eat. Your baby will not be able to guide the spoon purposefully and without losses on the way to the mouth, let alone pierce food onto the fork at the first attempt, but practice makes perfect. It is important that the baby cutlery is rounded and the handles are ergonomically shaped. This way, babies can experiment with them without risk of injury and try to emulate mummy and daddy.
It's best to give your little one their own spoon as soon as you start feeding them. Spills and noise are inevitable, but it's good for their development. Every beginning is hard and you as parents have to get through it.

The materials plastic and melamine have the advantage that they are very light and therefore easy to handle for the little ones. However, plastic sometimes contains softeners. Melamine cutlery releases harmful substances at high temperatures and is therefore not suitable for the microwave.
Sets made of metal convince with their appearance and robustness, but are somewhat heavier and therefore only conditionally suitable for learning how to handle cutlery.
The handles of metal cutlery are sometimes coated with silicone so that little hands can grip them better.

Some parents shy away from giving their children metal cutlery at the beginning. Due to their weight and robust appearance, the cutlery sometimes appears more solid than plastic versions. In principle, however, metal cutlery is just as suitable for children. So you can also orientate yourself here to an age of about ten months. Make sure that you do not choose cutlery that is too heavy to begin with. Aluminium, for example, is one of the lightest metals.

How many components a set includes differs from offer to offer. You can find two-piece sets that only consist of a children's spoon and a small fork.
Others include a knife, fork and spoon. In rare cases, instead of a knife, a pusher is included to help little ones push their food onto the fork or spoon.

A nice way to give the cutlery a personal touch is to engrave the child's name on the handles of the cutlery. You can find special engraving cutlery among the offers. These are usually made of stainless steel. Of course, you can also have individual shapes and motifs engraved on the cutlery.
