Coconut oil is particularly versatile. As a natural cosmetic, it is supposed to protect long hair from split ends, facilitate the removal of hair on the legs and keep the skin supple. The oil is also effective as a deodorant and is considered a healthy slimming agent due to its high content of medium-chain fatty acids.

The medium-chain fatty acids also include the so-called lauric acid, to which many pathogens and parasites such as mosquitoes or ticks react sensitively. That's why you can also use coconut oil as an insect repellent.

Furthermore, coconut oil is used in the so-called "oil pulling". Here you take a teaspoon of the oil in your mouth, which causes it to liquefy. Oil pulling is used for oral hygiene, as coconut oil has an antibacterial effect and also removes plaque and toxins from your mouth.

• Coconut fat: Coconut fat is obtained from dried grates of coconut meat, which is done either by pressing or extraction. After heating, hardening and bleaching, a white, tasteless and solid fat remains, which is used in the food industry as a substitute for palm oil.
• Coconut oil: Coconut oil is pressed from fresh coconut meat. The oil obtained is not further processed, which is why you'll find virgin coconut oil. It also has a solid consistency at room temperature and looks like white spreadable fat. The firm consistency is due to the high content of saturated fatty acids. Coconut oil has a fine coconut taste, should only be cold pressed and ideally a natural product from organic farming. Virgin coconut oil can also be obtained by extraction from coconut milk.

Coconut oil contains more medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) than any other vegetable fat or oil. These fatty acids are processed in the liver to so-called ketones and transported from there as high-quality energy suppliers for the nerve cells to the brain.

Although saturated fatty acids are often considered unhealthy, coconut oil can positively influence the metabolism and fat burning. The high proportion of lauric acid, a medium-chain fatty acid that increases the "good" fat, plays an important role here.

The lauric acid contained in coconut oil is also considered a slimming agent. However, losing weight with coconut oil only works with a simultaneous reduction of carbohydrates and the intake of other healthy fats such as omega-3 fatty acids. In plain language, this means that fried potatoes in coconut oil will set, while wild salmon and vegetables in coconut oil will provide you with a healthy oil mix.

The special taste of coconut oil can give dishes an exotic touch. Because it consists only of saturated fatty acids, coconut oil is the only gently pressed vegetable oil that does not develop harmful trans fats under high heat. 

When buying coconut oil, make sure it says "virgin" on the jar, is organically grown, and was pressed from ripe fruit as soon after harvest as possible. We don't recommend oils made from unripe nuts or nuts that have been stored for months, because they taste slightly rancid.

We recommend steaming vegetables and fish with coconut oil. Coconut oil also goes particularly well with Asian dishes such as curries. Virgin coconut oil is not only wonderful for cooking and frying, but also for baking. 

It scores points in baking and especially in Christmas baking, where the fine coconut aroma is very much in demand. In general, you can substitute butter and margarine with coconut oil, but coconut oil is more productive than butter because it is almost pure fat, so you don't have to replace the full amount of butter with coconut oil.

You can also use coconut oil for chocolate frosting and even when deep frying you have no problem with the oil, as long as you don't use virgin coconut oil.

High quality, virgin organic coconut oil is best for your hair if you want to use coconut oil as an hair product. Organic coconut oil has the advantage of being cold-pressed oil, which is usually also unbleached and unrefined. With organic coconut oil, you ensure that your hair actually benefits from using it. There are all the essential vitamins, nutrients and minerals in these coconut oils that prevent against dry hair, irritated scalp, dandruff and hair loss. It moisturizes, gives your hair more shine and helps against hair breakage when combing.

The organic oil acts like a protective film over each of your hairs, making them look less dull and brittle and making them more resistant overall. 

Not every coconut oil has these properties, so not every oil is suitable for hair care. On the market you will often find many coconut oils that have been industrially processed and are therefore no longer as rich in essential amino acids and nutrients. We advise you not to use these products.

If you need your coconut oil liquid, you can simply put it on the warm stove or heater and wait until all the ingredients are fully liquid.

This varies a little from production method to production method. Basically, coconut oil offers a particularly long shelf life compared to other oils, without you having to store it in the refrigerator.

Coconut oil is basically made with a two to three year shelf life. However, it actually lasts much longer than the manufacturer may indicate on the packaging. An estimated ten years is a period of time that high-quality, virgin, cold-pressed coconut oil can keep well.

If the coconut oil is kept clean and protected from light in the kitchen cupboard, you can assume that it will last almost as long when opened as when sealed. Coconut oil is also stable in the air, which means that it will not spoil faster under the influence of oxygen than in a sealed jar.

You should continue to store coconut oil at room temperature so that no condensation can form inside the coconut oil container. Water is an ideal breeding ground for all kinds of microbes to grow. If the concentration gets high enough, they can overwhelm even the oil's antimicrobial properties and contribute to the oil's spoilage. That being said, the actual storage temperature in the refrigerator is not a problem for the oil, but neither is it a particular advantage over room temperature.
