Sharpening a saw chain is a complicated process. I therefore recommend that you have this done by a specialist shop. However, if you want to sharpen the chain yourself, first read the operating instructions and, after putting on work gloves, follow the steps below:
tension the chain (if necessary)
fix the chainsaw blade with a vice
mark the first cutting tooth
use a round file for sharpening
use both hands and thumb to guide
file from the inside to the outside
take the correct angle, which in most cases is between 25 and 35 degrees, from the instruction manual.
Eventually, every saw chain wears out, regardless of the quality. Therefore, try not to use the chain until it is completely dull and reduce the wear with lubricant. This will save you a lot of effort.
To increase the service life of your chainsaw, I recommend that you clean it after every use. This ensures that the individual components are fully functional. It is also the easiest way to remove dirt.
If you have a petrol chainsaw, clean the air filter and make sure that the cooling fins and the chain housing are clean. Electric chainsaws need regular chain oil, and the chain case should also be kept clean. Also make sure that the chain tension is adequate and correct it if necessary. This loosens especially after longer running times.
A brush or cloth can be used for cleaning, as well as special cleaning agents against stubborn dirt and resin and oil residues. If you have a compressor, you can use it to remove light dirt very quickly. However, stubborn residues will not be removed in this way.
Before you go into detailed troubleshooting of the machine, first check that there is enough fuel in the tank. Pay particular attention to the correct mixing ratio of oil and petrol, which is explained in more detail in the user manual. In addition, the mixture should not be too old, as the quality deteriorates over time.
If the chainsaw still does not start, clean the air filter and the carburettor and clean the fuel strainer. Also check the ignition system, i.e. the ignition switch, the cables and the spark plug for function, cleanliness and any short circuits.
The cleaning of the carburettor needs some previous knowledge, because carburettor adjustments must be made. Therefore, I recommend that you contact a specialist workshop in an emergency.
The guide bar should only be replaced when the saw cut is not straight despite a correctly sharpened saw chain. Pay particular attention to whether the running surfaces of the bar are still absolutely even. You can test this simply by placing the chainsaw on a level surface. If the chainsaw falls over, you will either need a new guidebar or grind the running surfaces to the desired condition.
Also check the support for the guidebar and fix it if necessary. This must not move during operation. You can find more information about the guide rail at saegebob.de.
To operate your chainsaw, you need the right mixture of two-stroke oil and petrol with a minimum octane rating of 90 (RON). Many manufacturers already offer a ready-made mixture that has been specially designed for their models. For environmental reasons, I recommend that you use unleaded petrol if possible. Otherwise there is a risk of internal damage to chainsaws with catalytic converters.
The mixing ratio is usually 1:50 and 1:25 for engine oil of classification TC. You will find precise information on this in the operating instructions for the chainsaw. The TC classification stands for the highest quality level of a two-stroke engine oil and guarantees a long service life for your chainsaw.
When mixing, make sure that you first fill the engine oil and then the petrol into a suitable canister and then mix the two components properly.
In the worst case, an incorrect mixing ratio will lead to the total destruction of the chainsaw. A rough run or increased blue exhaust gases can be signs of a poor mixture.
