Primula veris, commonly known as cowslip, is a much-loved wildflower of meadows and hedgerows. Its fragrant, pendulous, lemon-yellow blooms are a simple yet striking sight in spring, bringing a natural charm to borders, wildlife areas, and cottage gardens. Awarded the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, this hardy perennial is easy to grow in sun or part shade. Beyond its ornamental appeal, cowslip also has edible petals that can be used fresh in salads, crystallised for cake decorations, or sprinkled over desserts. Sow from late winter in good seed compost. Scatter seed on the surface and gently firm down. Cover with glass or seal in a clear bag, placing in a shady spot without excluding light. Maintain soil damp but not wet. Germination usually occurs within 1015 days at 1518°C, but higher temperatures can hinder it.
