A jigger is a measuring cup that allows you to measure out the right amount of liquid. You usually use it when mixing cocktails or mixed drinks to measure out spirits perfectly. But you can also use it to measure juices and other cocktail ingredients.
In bars, you've probably heard the word "jigger" used to describe simply measuring liquids.

You hold the jigger in one hand at its thinnest point with your middle and index finger. Your palm should be facing up. Then, with your other hand, grab a bottle - preferably with a Speed Pourer attachment - and pour the liquid into the jigger. Now pour the contents of the jigger into a cocktail shaker or mixing glass with a quick flick of your wrist.
The Speed Pourer is an attachment that ensures that you spill little to nothing. You hold it as close and flat as possible to the jigger. The flatter you hold the bottle against the jigger, the slower the liquid will run out. This approach guarantees that you will spill little alcohol.

When it comes to measurements, it often depends on where you are on the globe. In Europe, bartenders prefer a different size than in the US, for example, with the English taking a separate role here.
The biggest difference between the two is between the Japanese and American styles: the Japanese is elongated and cone-shaped, while the American is flat and cylindrical. However, both styles have the exact same fill size. The advantage with the Japanese jiggers is that you can make a slight mistake when filling them. Due to the elongated shape, the amount that is missing or too much is not as large as with the American version.
In addition, traditional jiggers always have two sides, which are of different sizes. The small side is called pony and the large jigger.

Jiggers are usually made of stainless steel, but can also be made of copper. Stainless steel has the advantage that it is completely unbreakable.

Europeans prefer a jigger of four or two centilitres. However, there are exceptions: In England, a capacity of five and two and a half centiliters is common for the jigger. In America the capacity of a jigger is four and a half and on the other hand three centilitres, whereby the Americans rather calculate in ounces (oz.). So: one and a half and one oz.
