Water taps

The faucets that are used in your kitchen or bathroom are in most cases single-lever faucets or single-lever mixers that you can easily and comfortably operate with one hand. You can control the temperature and flow rate quickly, conveniently and economically by means of a lever, which is attached either to the top or the side of the tap body.
In addition to this widespread type of faucet, you will find many other faucet designs that are suitable for different applications:
Two-handle faucet
Faucet with hose spray or swan neck spray
Wall tap
Front window faucet
Sensor fitting
Filter fitting
Faucet with dosing function
That depends above all on your personal preferences. In the following, I will show you which taps have proven to be practical in which area of application:
Place of use
Types of taps
Bathroom sink
Surface-mounted faucet
Concealed fitting
Single lever mixer
Two-handle fitting
with or without thermostatic valve
Bathtub
Bath taps
with or without shower head

Countertop washbasin
Garden
Outdoor sink
Outdoor Faucet

The low-pressure tap is responsible for heating water via a boiler or under-sink storage tank. This has three connection hoses: two for the hot water tank and one for the connection to the cold water pipe in the wall.
The water storage tank stores and heats cold water. If you now turn on the tap for hot water, cold water flows out of the tap into the boiler and pushes the water that has been heated and stored there up through the tap. This also explains the third connection hose, which leads the cold water draining off into the boiler. The inlet to the tap is always open, so no or only very low pressure can build up in the cylinder, which is where the term "low pressure" comes from.
Even though the market share of high-pressure taps is much higher than that of low-pressure taps, a low-pressure tap is often required, especially in kitchens and for guest WCs.
You can recognise low-pressure taps by the red lightning bolt on the packaging.
When buying a faucet, you should pay attention to some technical data in order to find a suitable product that complements your sink perfectly.
The following dimensions are decisive for the choice of your tap:
Thread in inches
Height
Projection (length at which the spout protrudes into the basin from the center of the faucet body.)
Before buying a faucet, be sure to find out what its dimensions must be in terms of the above criteria in order to fit smoothly into your bathroom set.

Which material is suitable for taps?
Among various materials, the following are particularly suitable when it comes to the quality of taps:
Stainless steel: rustproof and durable
Stainless steel is an alloyed or unalloyed steel with a special degree of purity. You can find faucets in shiny or brushed stainless steel variants that look very classy.
Brass: the changeable alloy
Brass is an alloy of the main components copper and zinc. The colour of the material depends on the zinc or copper content. With a high zinc content, brass can be light yellow to white-yellow, while with a high copper content it can be brownish to golden red.
Aluminium: as a light or heavy weight
Aluminium is a light metal with a silvery-white colour. Pure aluminium is so soft that it can be easily processed into foil and sheet. Taps are therefore made from aluminium alloys and are usually anodised. Anodising creates a hard and scratch-resistant metal surface, while retaining the metallic aluminium character.
Chrome: durable protection
Fittings made of brass, stainless steel or aluminium are often chrome-plated. Coating them with chrome makes them more robust and protects them from chemical damage.
A conventional tap lets up to 20 litres of water flow into the sink per minute. Particularly economical models, on the other hand, manage with about half that amount. So-called "water-saving taps" are not only easy on your wallet, but also on the environment. By using water-saving taps or water flow regulators, you can not only reduce your water consumption, but also your energy consumption. Water is saved by limiting the speed and flow rate of the water.
As a rule, the water from the tap has a temperature of at least 40 degrees Celsius on a warm setting.
Hot water basically means heated drinking or service water in a temperature range of usually 30 to 60 degrees Celsius. Above this, it is referred to as hot water. A water temperature of 35 to 40 degrees is usually perceived as warm to the touch, while for babies the risk of scalding already begins at 38 degrees Celsius, as this temperature can be too hot for young, sensitive bodies.
Hot water tanks should always be able to produce water at 60 degrees Celsius. In this way, they offer reliable protection against infections, because if the temperatures are below this, dangerous legionella bacteria can multiply.
Step 1: Turn off the corner valves located under the basin and close the main water tap as a precaution. Check that no more water is actually coming in.
Step 2: Loosen the connecting pipes or hoses on the corner valves. These are fastened with so-called union nuts.
Step 3: Loosen the attachment of the faucet under the sink and take it out. Carefully remove any silicone from the hole with a knife.
Step 4: Unscrew the hoses on the old fitting and attach them to the new one. Make sure the fittings are seated correctly and that they do not tilt as a result of the replacement.
Step 5: Put a sealing washer and a washer over the hoses to protect the ceramic.
Step 6: Push the hoses through the hole in the sink, followed by the mounting screw and finally insert the faucet into the hole. Do not tighten the fitting completely, but first adjust it in the middle so that you can screw it on tightly afterwards.
Step 7: Connect the hoses to the corner valves using union nuts.
Step 8: Turn on the corner valves and the main faucet after the new faucet is fully installed and test if everything is tight and working. Afterwards, you can also install a water filter for faucets.
In the first step, turn off the main tap and the shut-off valves so that no more water can flow out of the tap. To let the remaining water flow out, you have to open the tap. Then place a bucket under the sink, because if there is any water left over, it will end up in the bucket and not on the floor.
Now, using a wrench or pipe wrench, unscrew the coupling nut of the hose connection underneath the sink. Pull out the washer with the retaining plate and move the tap upwards out of the hole in the sink.
Next, unscrew the aerator from the tap. Place the aerator and faucet in a bucket of warm vinegar and water solution (1:3) to clean until the faucet is completely covered. Let the calcified parts soak overnight and rinse them with clean water the next morning. You can then replace the aerator and tighten the tap.
In contrast to high-pressure taps, a slight dripping is normal with low-pressure taps, as long as the amount of water is kept within limits. What you can do about it is to ask yourself the following questions and try to get to the bottom of the cause:
Is the water pressure too high? If more than a few drops come after turning off the tap, the water pressure may be too high for the hot water tank. The first thing you should check is whether the so-called flow limiter is missing. This small but very important component is located under the faucet between the angle valve and the cold water hose. When installed correctly, it restricts the water pressure.
Is there air in the boiler? Air pockets in the boiler can also be responsible for running water. Before installation, you should shake the boiler a few times to let air escape. Afterwards you can carry out a complete bleeding process.
Have the hot and cold water hoses been reversed? If hot water flows in after you turn off the faucet, even though you only turned on cold water before, the faucet hoses are probably connected backwards. In this case, an air bubble is created, which is responsible for the running water.
In addition, the aerator, a small attachment at the end of the faucet, can leak if it is heavily calcified and thus no longer reliably limit the amount of water.
Two-handle faucets have valves with sealing rings built into each of the handles to retain water. Over time, however, the sealing rings can become porous, resulting in dripping. If the faucet is still dripping despite a new valve, a worn valve seat may also be the culprit.
Single-lever mixers have a plastic cartridge inside the tap. Depending on the position of the mixer, this allows hot and cold water to pass through in a certain quantity. However, it can become leaky if there is a lot of limescale.
Depending on what applies to you, I advise you to repair or replace the affected area or part. You can usually do this with only a few tools. If you have any doubts about your DIY skills, don't be afraid to contact a craftsman.
