An office package is a set of various useful programs for processing common office tasks on the computer. These include, for example, programs for word processing, spreadsheets or for creating presentations. The layout is usually similar for all included programs, so you will quickly become familiar with the user interface.

The minimum equipment of the Microsoft packages, the Home and Student version, includes the following programs:
Word
Excel
PowerPoint
OneNote
Other packages, such as Office Professional, have additional programs:
Access
OutLook
OneDrive
Publisher

You may install the software on multiple computers if you purchase an Office bundle for multiple users. If the bundle has one approved user, you are generally only allowed to install the software on one computer or notebook and on the smartphone or tablet. You can find detailed information about the regulation on the manufacturer's website.
For this reason, many providers sell different packages, which differ only in the scope of the permitted users. Before buying, pay attention to the description of the software so that you do not buy too many or too few user licenses.
For example, SoftMaker Office 2016 Home and Business allows up to three users (computers) and Microsoft Office 2016 Home and Student allows one user (computer).

Office packages are designed for different, but not all operating systems, depending on the manufacturer. Most packages work on Microsoft Windows and Apple macOS systems. Often iOS, Android or Linux are also supported.
Before purchasing the Office package, check the minimum system requirements and upgrade your operating system if necessary. The exact requirements can be found in the description of the respective software package. Below is a general overview of the supported operating systems:

The Office packages differ in the provider, the scope of permitted users, the included software, the price and the version. This results from the fact that many target groups are to be addressed with different packages. Comprehensive bundles, for example, have programs such as Access, which are tailored to specific areas and are not needed by every person.
Trial versions and full versions are usually differentiated by the limited duration of use or by reduced functions.

It is not possible to upgrade an existing version of Office to a newer version. You can either purchase the new version individually with limited update supply or purchase the Office 365 subscription. This will always provide you with the latest security updates, newest features and the latest version of Office at no additional cost.
