Cleaning products
For the basic set of cleaning products for cleaning your household, you only need five different products:
- neutral all-purpose cleaner
- scouring powder
- vinegar cleaner, alternatively citric acid
- hand dishwashing detergent (if you don't have a dishwasher)
- laundry detergent (to use with your washing machine or washer dryer, otherwise you need a handwash/travel gel)
We recommend to use a microfibre cloth, bottle or glass cleaners and a shower squeegee to apply the detergents to the desired surface.
In general, you should not mix cleaning products. Chemical reactions can occur that can be dangerous to your health. If a cleaning agent containing chlorine comes into contact with acidic components, such as a vinegar cleaner, toxic chlorine gas can be produced.
The air in the room is already enough of a common breeding ground, which is why you should ventilate the room well during and after cleaning, and also not use such cleaning agents on the same surface in immediate succession.
In principle, cleaning agents cannot spoil and therefore cannot expire. Their shelf life is almost unlimited. The information on the best-before date on the packaging of the cleaning agents often suggests otherwise, but this is purely a sales tactic so that you buy new cleaning agents as quickly as possible.
Basically, you can use up cleaning products until the bottle is empty, as they cannot spoil. However, if you want to change your cleaning product and therefore dispose of an old one, you should put it in the hazardous waste. Under no circumstances should you consider disposing of it down the drain. You can get rid of your hazardous waste at your local recycling or reclamation center.
Disinfectant cleaners have an antibacterial effect and thus reduce germs and fungi. Such special cleaners are labelled accordingly so that you can distinguish them from all-purpose cleaners. Antibacterial cleaners are not necessary in a normal household. If a person with a very contagious disease or a weak immune system lives under your roof, you can think about using such a hygiene cleaner. You find a wide range of antibacterial liquid handwash in our category “Hand care”.
Yes, because cleaners generally contain chemicals and other toxic ingredients that can be harmful to your respiratory system and lungs. Some of the substances contained are considered carcinogenic. Therefore, always follow the instructions for proper use on the respective packaging of the cleaning agent.
Organic cleaners do not contain fragrances or dyes. Organic cleaners do not contain preservatives and should be free of phosphates and solvents. Then they are biodegradable.
You will find a corresponding eco-label on the packaging of environmentally compatible cleaning agents. It is even better for the environment if you pay attention to plastic-free packaging.
